Watson must deliver in Cleveland, question marks for Bears

Deshaun Watson needs to step it up in Cleveland if the Browns are to reach their full potential. The Bears invested heavily in new players during the offseason – but will they catch on?

Cleveland Browns

Strengths

The Browns offense is actually one of the best in the league. There is WR Amari Cooper, who last season scored 9 touchdowns and 1160 receiving yards and is still playing at an absolute top level. Running back Nick Chubb is right up there with his teammate, the running back was able to produce an average of five yards on 300 attempts per run. Behind Cooper, there is a solid receiver unit as well, with rookie Cedric Tillmann going up against the experienced Donovan People-Jones. Competition, as we all know, is good for business. Not to mention tight end David David Njoku, who is one of the best players at his position. The Browns’ O-line is also impressive, with all starters returning and even Ethan Pocic retained with a new contract. Defensively, one pro in particular stands out, Myles Garrett was among the absolute elite with 16 sacks last season. A small coup was achieved with the trade for Za’Darius Smith, the edge defender moved from Minnesota to Cleveland. The two will be coached by new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

Weaknesses

Actually, this is a really good offense, were it not for quarterback Deshaun Watson. The 27-year-old only played part of last season for reasons, but he didn’t justify his gigantic contract at all with his performance. On the contrary. Watson simply couldn’t get rid of the ball in time, as evidenced by various statistics. The QB himself blamed his receivers’ lack of timing for his performance. However, with a complete offseason and the aforementioned offensive weapons, that may not be a factor in 2023. Overall, the Browns had a lot of trouble on deep passes, both on throws and balls caught. There’s also a bit of a question mark with rookie Elijah Moore, who caught attention in 2021 but clashed mightily with coaches on the Jets last year. Defensively, there is also room for improvement: 20th in points allowed per game, 25th in yards allowed per carry. The lack of depth at the cornerback position is also a concern.

Motto of the season: Watson must deliver! There is enough talent both offensively and defensively to make it to the Championship Game, but Deshaun Watson clearly needs to step up for that to happen.

Chicago Bears

Strengths

With the cap space available, the Bears have rebuilt defensively and drafted a number of players for the secondary and D-line. There is now enough depth on the roster, and first-round talent was secured in the form of first-round pick Darnell Wright. Besides the new players in Chicago, the “old hands” have to develop further. It’s time to finally take advantage of Justin Fields’ rushing abilities instead of hoping for deep passes. Fields had the most rushing yards in the league among QBs (1143), yet still ended the season with an abysmal 3-14 record.

Weaknesses

23rd in points scored and 32nd in opponent points allowed – both offensively and defensively, not that much matched up last season. Nearly 30 players left the franchise, and the front office had to absorb that. It’s also clear some big-name pros like David Montgomery and Riley Reiff are gone. Some talent came in, but they will need time. Justin Fields, in particular, is a head-scratcher. How can it be that such a strong running QB is so unsuccessful at short distances (28th in the league)? Sure, the poor O-line was also to blame, but the 24-year-old also has to look at his own nose. But even though Chicago management has stepped on the gas in many areas, the D-line has been treated a bit too stepmotherly. The secondary is full of young talent, but what happens when some of them don’t pan out? Plan B, no way.

Motto of the season: Investments in the future are all well and good, but what does that mean for the here and now? No other team in the NFL has a season as bad as the Bears.

Da wäre WR Amari Cooper, der letzte Saison 9 Touchdowns und 1160 Receiving Yards abrufen konnte und immer noch auf absoluten Top-Niveau spielt. Runningback Nick Chubb steht seinem Teammate in nichts nach, der Runningback konnte bei 300 Attempts pro Lauf durchschnittlich fünf Yards produzieren. Auch hinter Cooper zeigt sich eine solide Receiver-Unit, Rookie Cedric Tillmann trifft auf den erfahrenen Donovan People-Jones. Konkurrenz belebt ja bekanntlich das Geschäft. Nicht zu vergessen Tight End David David Njoku, der zu den besten Spielern auf seiner Position gehört. Auch die O-Line der Browns beeindruckt, alle Starter kehren zurück und sogar Ethan Pocic konnte mit einem neuen Vertrag gehalten werden. Defensiv ist vor allem ein Profi hervorzuheben, Myles Garrett gehörte mit 16 Sacks in der abgelaufenen Saison zur absoluten Elite. Schwächen

Eigentlich ist das eine wirklich gute Offensive, wäre da nicht Quarterback Deshaun Watson. Der 27-Jährige spielte zwar aus Gründen nur einen Teil der letzten Saison, seinen gigantischen Vertrag rechtfertigte er mit seiner Leistung allerdings überhaupt nicht. Im Gegenteil. Watson wurde den Ball einfach nicht rechtzeitig los, das zeigen diverse Statistiken. Der QB selbst machte das fehlende Timing seiner Receiver für seine Performance verantwortlich. Mit einer kompletten Off Season und dem oben genannten Offensivwaffen darf das 2023 aber keine Rolle mehr spielen. Insgesamt hatten die Browns große Schwierigkeiten bei tiefen Pässen, sowohl bei den Würfen als auch bei den gefangenen Bällen. Ein kleines Fragezeichen gibt es auch bei Neuzugang Elijah Moore, der zwar 2021 auf sich aufmerksam machen konnte, letztes Jahr aber gewaltig mit den Coaches bei den Jets aneckte. Defensiv gibt es ebenfalls  Verbesserungspotenzial: 20. Platz bei zugelassenen Punkten pro Spiel, 25. Platz bei erlaubten Yards pro Carry. Auch die mangelnde Tiefe auf der Cornerback-Position ist besorgniserregend.

Motto der Saison: Watson muss liefern! Sowohl offensiv als auch defensiv gibt es genügend Talent um es bis zum Championship Game zu schaffen, doch dafür muss Deshaun Watson sich klar steigern.

Chicago Bears

Stärken

Durch den freien Cap Space wurde allem defensiv einiges umgebaut, auch im Draft wurden diverse Spieler für die Secondary oder die D-Line verpflichtet. Tiefe im Kader gibt es jetzt erstmal genug, erstklassiges Talent konnte durch Erstrundenpick Darnell Wright ebenfalls gesichert werden. Neben den neuen Spielern in Chicago müssen sich aber vor allem die “alten Hasen” weiterentwickeln. Es wird Zeit endlich die Rushing Fähigkeiten von Justin Fields auszunutzen, anstatt auf tiefe Pässe zu hoffen. Fields hatte unter den QBs die meisten Rushing Yards in der Liga (1143), trotzdem endete die Saison mit einem katastrophalen 3-14 Record.

Schwächen

Fast 30 Spieler haben die Franchise verlassen, das musste das Front Office erst einmal auffangen. Klar ist auch, einige namhafte Profis wie David Montgomery oder Riley Reiff sind weg. Einige Talente kamen dazu, doch die werden Zeit brauchen. Vor allem die Personalie Justin Fields sorgt für Kopfschütteln. Wie kann es sein, dass ausgerechnet so ein laufstarker QB bei kurzen Distanzen so wenig erfolgreich ist (28. Platz in der Liga)? Klar, Schuld daran war auch die schlechte O-Line, doch auch der 24-Jährige muss sich an die eigene Nase fassen. Doch auch wenn das Management aus Chicago in vielen Bereichen Gas gegeben hat, die D-Line wurde etwas zu stiefmütterlich behandelt. Die Secondary ist zwar voll mit Nachwuchs, doch was passiert wenn einige davon nicht zünden? Plan B, Fehlanzeige.

Motto der Saison: Investments in die Zukunft schön und gut, doch was bedeutet das für das hier und jetzt? Bei keinem Team in der NFL lässt sich die Saison so schlecht einschätzen, wie bei den Bears.
