Tipp Tampa Bay @ Minnesota Vikings
The Buccs have had a mixed preseason, with a loss to the Steelers and two wins over the Jets and Ravens to start the new season. In a highly competitive NFC South, Tampa Bay has to go full throttle from the start of the season. But with quarterback Baker Mayfield, this could be difficult. After all, things haven’t gone well for the former first-round pick since 2020, and the 28-year-old needs to work on his turnover rate in particular. Now, however, the new starter will be up against a defense that is difficult to predict.
The defense of the Vikings has been strengthened, especially in the secondary. Newcomer Marcus Davenport now supports the D-Line. The Steelers brought in none other than Brian Flores, who is expected to take the Minnesota defense to the next level. Flores is known for his intense blitzing, as well as a lot of “man-to-man” defense. What’s special: The former Dolphins head coach manages to make his defense unpredictable. For example, he uses players in unusual positions, creating deliberate chaos all the way into the defensive backfield.
On offense, we’ll see a lot of play-action plays with Kirk Cousins, and alongside Justin Jefferson, rookie Jordan Addison will often be the target. Addison has been at his best this summer, with experts believing he can get up to 80 catches in his first year as a pro. Even though we probably shouldn’t expect any more top performances from Cousins, the longtime QB of the Vikings is rock solid.
Tampa Bay’s departures, on the other hand, are piling up, forcing both sides to rebuild their rosters. Even if the many young talents in the pass rush and the receiving corps catch fire, success depends to a large extent on Mayfield. Shortly before the start of the season, there were two pieces of bad news: WR Russell Gage is out for the entire season due to injury. And with star receiver Mike Evans, it looks like it’s time to say goodbye – a contract extension seems unlikely.
We note: Not the best omens for the Buccaneers’ first win of the season. We are therefore betting on a win by the Minnesota Vikings, who not only look more solid, but also more well-rehearsed to us.
